Work at Home: Not Knowing This Extremely Basic Rule Can Kill Your Home Business

There are many ways to make money online and working from home businesses usually involve the use of communication tools - like the internet.
Therefore, it only makes sense for us to understand what the Internet is - the internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks that interchange data… that consists of millions of private and public, academic, business and government networks.
That’s the technical term that I paraphrased and borrowed from Wikipedia.
1. Selling On The Internet
Selling on the internet is really not about selling but rather, providing information and value to the visitor that makes him want to buy from you. Unlike the offline methods of selling where you can use persuasion skills and various selling tactics, when you’re online, you don’t have that. You need to attract the visitor by giving him perceived value.
Think about this, let’s imagine you doing a search for “Party Recipes”. You visit a site that has nothing but covers of books and recipes… versus… you visit a site that has some free recipes and the site sells all the recipes on the site and more in a book.
Which site would you stay on?
Point to take note is that I’m not saying which would you buy from but rather, which site would you be willing to spend more time and stay on - I’m placing my bets on the second site. The second site has provided a certain perceived value to the visitor. The key is to provide enough information to the visitor but not so much that he gets everything that he wants. Because once he’s satisfied, he doesn’t need to buy anything from you anymore.
You can apply that concept for your own home business.
When you want to promote your business online, your site has to provide an immediate perceivable value to the visitor - one way you can do that by having a strong, irresistable headline.
2. The Killer Headline
Your headline to your home business site is the most important thing that you must get right. Reason being that most visitors that come to your site don’t know who you are - and don’t care about you. The fact of the matter is that people want to know “What’s In It For Me?”
You have to answer that question very quickly because if you don’t, the visitor will go somewhere else that can give him an answer to his burning question.
A mistake I made when I first started out and I’m sure some new online businesses also make, is to state their company name or their website URL as their headline. WRONG! Because - who cares? Even if you think you’ve got a catchy website name or something… no one cares. Except maybe if the site has an awesome headline like “More Money To Spend - Isn’t That What We All Want?” Okay, I digress.
Your headline sets the tone for your website. I believe it’s Michael Cheney who said a good headline is worth eighty cents of every dollar paid/invested.
3. The Internet Wasn’t Made for Porn
The internet was made to communicate with people. It’s a great tool that people use to communicate with anyone worldwide. So if you want to build a successful business online, you absolutely have to recognise that the internet is really just a huge communication tool.
One rule of sales is that people will buy from people that they generally know, like or trust. If you have communicated well with people, you have a better chance of them buying from you. Use the internet to connect with people and be real about it.
With the advent of Web2.0 and the tons and tons of social networking sites, many people have blatantly used that for ads and trying to sell to others by becoming “friends” with others. After becoming “friends”, the new “friend” would start sending messages about making money online and stuff.
Now, that’s trying to sell. Another well-known saying is “People don’t like to be sold to but people like to buy” and this applies especially for trying to create a business and presence online. Communicate with people, get them to like you for who you are, be real about it, let them buy from you by their own free will.
