Starting from today, I will be posting a series of tips on How to have a Successful Home Business. These aren’t going to be technical tips but practical tips that can be applied with immediate effect.

And here’s the tip for today:

Set Up The Goal Post

Now, it’s easy to determine the goal that we want to achieve in home businesses and that’s to make money. Right? Well, that applies to most people – not to all.

Untold number of people attempt to start their home business and they have got absolutely no idea what it is they want to achieve. When you are setting up your home business, you need to have a goal. Have it clear in your mind. It really helps if you can write out your goals. The top successful people in the world all determine their goals clearly either in form of writing or some way that reminds them clearly. Who uses it? I’ll list some real life people.

David Yonggi Cho – Korean Christian minister and Founder of the world’s largest congregation
Jack Canfield – Author of Chicken Soup for the Soul
Zig Ziglar – Reknown top motivational speaker
Jim Rohn – Teacher whom the likes of Anthony Robbins and Les Brown (to name a couple) look up to

Countless people have already used the techniques of goal setting and they’ve attained astonishing feats that they never thought they could accomplish. Here’s a simple guideline that you can use to set SMARTER goals:

S – Specific
Being specific about your goal helps to define exactly what you want to achieve and how you want to achieve. Like if you want to have a goal of clearing up a debt, be specific about it, how much is it in dollars and cents? Be specific about how much you want to clear.

M – Measurable
There should be something of measure that you can use to measure your progress. Like weight loss, improvement in running timing, how much savings you’ve done, etc

A – Action Plan
Have an action plan for your goal. Break it down into bite-size pieces. When you’ve got the goal in mind or in writing, sometimes, it’s very daunting and large. Break that goal down into more manageable sizes where you can handle easily. And when you finish one of those small broken down goals, you’ll feel more encouraged to take on the next challenge.

R – Realistic
The goal in mind must be something that’s real and it must be something that you have control over. Some people set a goal of being a millionaire (that’s good!) but they’re not willing to change their mindsets and attitude to think and work like a millionaire.

T – Time Management
Set a finish line for the goal – if you don’t set a finish line, when do you know to stop? You won’t! You might end up burning out or worse yet, stopping too early. Set a definite goal to achieve your goal.

E – Expectation Management
Sometimes, after the finish line has gone by and you haven’t attained your goal, you need to check if you have set your expectations too high? Or if you’ve reached your goal way too early, did you set it too low? The goal to set from now should be somewhat at an attainable level but not too far that you give up and not too low that it’s no challenge.

R – Review
Here’s where most people drop the ball in goal setting. After having done everything, you need to look back and review your progress. Did you get what you want? Did you attain what you set out to achieve? Yes or no? Discover why you succeeded and why you failed. It’s perfectly fine even if you’ve failed, just learn from the experience, review it through and then set a new goal that will challenge you to greater heights.

So that’s the tip for today! Feel free to leave any comments.
